LAND OF LINCOLN LEGAL AID SERVICES UNDER COVID-19 EMERGENCY

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Pursuant to Governor Pritzker’s Shelter in Place Order, Land of Lincoln Legal Aid has closed all offices until further notice.  Staff are working remotely as they are able.

Land of Lincoln will continue to provide free legal assistance to low-income people who live in our 65-county service territory.  If you need help, call us at 1-877-342-7891.  Or apply online at https://lincolnlegal.org/apply.

FOR CURRENT CLIENTS OF LAND OF LINCOLN:

I need to talk to my lawyer about my case.  What should I do?

Your attorney is still working remotely.  You can call and leave a message on your lawyer’s voicemail.  Or you can send them an email.  However, it may take extra time for your lawyer to get back to you.

What about my court date?  Do I still need to go to court?

If you are a current client, please talk to your attorney about your court date.  The courthouses have all closed for most court cases, except for emergency matters such as Orders of Protection.  Court dates have been postponed for the time being.  Your lawyer will let you know when there is a new court date.

My lawyer told me to drop off some papers at the Land of Lincoln office.  What should I do?

Call your lawyer and ask him or her if the papers still need to be dropped off.  If yes, the lawyer needs to make special arrangements.

I have an emergency and I can’t get a hold of my lawyer.  What should I do?

If you have an emergency that you need to talk to your lawyer about, send them an email or call the local office.  We have very minimal staffing during this time and we are trying to answer phones as best we can.

If your life or safety are threatened or you have a medical emergency, call 911.

FOR APPLICANTS SEEKING ASSISTANCE FROM LAND OF LINCOLN:

I am not a current client of Land of Lincoln but I need to talk to a lawyer.  Can you help me?

You can still apply for our legal services by calling our Legal Advice and Referral Center at 1-877-342-7891.  Or apply online at https://lincolnlegal.org/apply.
