In May 2001, I began my journey at Land of Lincoln’s Mount Vernon office as a law clerk. On my first day, I was seated at a desk facing a large map of Illinois, with a telephone and an antiquated laptop—all adorned with Winnie the Pooh stickers. My initial reaction was confusion, but little did I know the impact this place and one extraordinary person would have on my life.

That person was MaryAnn Henderson, a long-time paralegal at Land of Lincoln. I first encountered her in a whirlwind of energy, passion, and an unmistakable presence that left a lasting impression. Over the years, MaryAnn became more than a colleague; she became my mentor and friend, guiding me in ways I never expected. She saw potential in me that I hadn’t yet recognized and took it upon herself to help shape me into the attorney I am today.

MaryAnn had a remarkable journey—as a mom, foster mom, student, and professional. She once shared with me that she had taken the LSAT but chose not to pursue law school. She preferred the role of managing paralegal, where she could make a unique impact. Her wisdom and self-awareness were unparalleled.

Sadly, MaryAnn passed away on Christmas Day, leaving a legacy that words can hardly capture. Her former colleagues remember her as the heart of the office—energetic, compassionate, and deeply devoted to those she served. Larry Ruemmler, who hired her in 1981, described how she took care of everyone around her, whether it was her work family or clients who cherished her support. “For 30 years, MaryAnn was the heart of the office. She loved Land of Lincoln and we loved her.” The Honorable Michael Fiello, former Land of Lincoln Managing Attorney, praised MaryAnn’s unwavering work ethic and stated that she had “a tremendous heart filled with compassion for those she served…the world would be a better place if it had more MaryAnn Hendersons.”

MaryAnn taught me many lessons, one of which came from the very stickers I initially dismissed. She showed me that Winnie the Pooh had it right all along—life is about embracing who you are, fighting for what matters, and keeping those you love in your heart forever.

“If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.” — Winnie the Pooh.
