As a Land of Lincoln attorney, you will represent clients in individual cases, major cases and appeals. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting intake interviews and making case acceptance decisions.

  • Developing an area of specialization.
  • Participating in community group and/or economic development activities.

Opportunities for Professional Growth

Land of Lincoln offers outstanding career growth opportunities. You will gain immediate experience with clients and in the courtroom. You will receive supervision from experienced managing and staff attorneys. Approximately one-third of Land of Lincoln attorneys have worked in legal services for more than 15 years. You will also receive excellent training. Each year, Land of Lincoln offers an intensive trial training for new attorneys.

Benefits

Our starting salary is comparable to other Illinois public interest firms. We also offer excellent benefits that surpass those offered in private practice including medical insurance, group dental, 401(k) retirement savings plan with employer match, and a generous leave policy.

Office Locations

Land of Lincoln’s five regional offices serve central and southern Illinois. Each office serves a multi-county area. Offices are located in Alton and East St. Louis in the St. Louis Area; Carbondale, the home of Southern Illinois University; Springfield, the state capitol; and Champaign-Urbana, the home of University of Illinois.

Clerkships/Internships

Land of Lincoln encourages applications for paid and unpaid clerkships from highly qualified law students interested in exploring public service work. While the specific work will vary from office to office, law clerks can participate in a range of legal activities, including client interviews and assistance with initial intake, negotiations with the opposing party, legal research and writing, community education and outreach or participation in administrative hearings or court proceedings. Students who have completed their second year of law school and have been certified under Illinois’ 711 rule may have the opportunity to directly handle a court proceeding under the supervision of a Land of Lincoln attorney. Interested applicants should directly contact the local office in which they are interested.
